Nothing’s sacred for Greg Scarnici (even Madonna)

They say that Imitation is the greatest form of flattery. And that to be satirized is the true note of having achieved indelible celebrity. If that is the case than pop icons like Beyoncé and Britney Spears should be truly humbled and ecstatic by the attention they've been afforded by comedian Greg Scarnici.

His YouTube video antics and parodies of Britney's less than epic MTV VMA performance of "Gimme More" became a viral sensation, but it was his lambast of Black Eyed Peas front woman Fergie that landed Scarnici in hot water. Fergie was none to happy with Greg's lady lumps and the label forced him to remove his take on "Fergilicious" from the public domain. Apparently Mrs. Josh Duhamel doesn't have much of a sense of humor.

Nothing’s sacred

But certainly there are some things that are just sacred and shouldn’t be touched or maligned no matter the entertainment value. Greg Scarnici doesn’t think so. Which is why his latest target is none other than the biggest gay pop icon in the world! Scarnici is exploring his inner diva and taking on Madonna’s now-classic Sex photo essay.

And the inspiration behind reinventing Madonna’s Sex: "It was weird," Scarnici explains, "it came to me in a dream. I had a dream that I should reshoot the book in drag."

This immaculate conception of sorts even gave the expert parody artist a good chuckle. "There was no way it was physically possible," he rationalized. Yes, logistically it would prove an interesting challenge to first conceal his man-bits, and second shoot it topless, seeing as how Madonna is bare-breasted and defying gravity for most of her Sex antics, but the idea just wouldn’t lay low. "I spoke to a couple of friends about [the idea] and they thought it was great!" Certainly if Scarnici was determined to pull it off, it would be his most blonde ambitious stunt to date.

Ironic and cheeky

Even Madonna has admitted to basing moments of her career on being ironic and cheeky, so maybe Scarnici’s parody of her Sex book -- now re-dubbed Sex In Drag is only too appropriate. "Everyone was so wrapped up in the graphic nature of the book, that the irony -- and humor -- of it were lost." But now ripe for Scarnici’s brand of comedy relief. Shot mostly within in a weekend on Fire Island, the book has Scarnici playing the role of "Chita" (to Madonna’s "Dita") and re-imagines in bizarro-world fashion some of the most memorable moments from Madonna’s Sex-capades. "It took three hours to get into the make-up," and prosthetics, "to create the entire look -- and can you believe that very few Fire Island regulars even noticed what I was up to? No one even batted an eye." Albeit even the Queen of Shock herself, couldn’t have imagined what to make of his get up.

Working with his creative team to replicate the feel of the iconically erotic shots crafted by legendary fashion photog Steven Meisel, Sex In Drag remarkably mimics the look and style of the original book including Scarnici’s own, or rather "Chita’s" own musings. One example promising to "teach you how to tuck." It really makes you wonder how this comedic maestro still flies remarkably under the radar among the company he keeps. Scarnici has and continues to contribute to one of the longest running sketch comedy shows on television: Saturday Night Live, but he admits, "My kind of aesthetic isn’t necessary built into what is done on SNL."

To promote the release of Sex In Drag Scarnici arranged for a series of premiere events in New York City, including a sneak peak unveiling at the F*Word at Splash, and a performance piece with video installation at Vig 27. Nightclub drag legend Sherry Vine provided the live act lending her talent to make his launch party a success.

Vine revealed, "I’ll be performing an original parody of Madonna’s ’Deeper and Deeper’. It’s going to be wild!" Both Sherry Vine and Scarnici have paired their talents before and have proved possessed of a wonderful comedic dynamic. "Greg’s a worker-bee -- and those are rare," Sherry Vine says of her co-heart. "He’s really funny."

Sex In Drag is just the latest of his ventures, Scarnici happily unveiled his 12 Inch Freak last year... and he can prove it! Just ask him to show you and he’ll pull out that piece of work: his CD... (what did you think I was talking about?) a compilation of original tracks he produced himself. A pop/funk/house infusion of hits that are guaranteed to help you release your inner freak with track titles like "Gay For Pay," "Buy It, Roll It, Light It, Smoke It" and of course the "Freak," which Scarnici admits was inspired [read: ripped off] by Cameo.

What started as a fanciful hobby for Scarnici has turned into an animal all of it’s own and given launch to several expressions of his multiple personalities; all good though because it’s inspired the kind of celebrity that appears guaranteed in the new millennium - he’s become an internet sensation!

Like me, you’re perhaps anxiously wondering what Greg Scarnici will take on next. Who will be the next victim of his sharp tongue and prickly wit? Certainly you won’t have time to wait very long as he’s constantly inspired and coming up with new means to mock the merrily, and so long as Lindsay does he best to stay clean, Hilary Duff proposes another music venture, Lady Gaga wears more meat, and Paris Hilton continues to pass the stash, Greg Scarnici will be there -- watching and waiting to make a new funny last a little longer.

Sex In Drag will be available in various formats including a downloadable ebook version playable on iPad and other electronic book readers as well as a hardcover coffee table book.
