DaBaby Tweeted this Apology After Homophobic HIV Remarks
DaBaby is now saying sorry after his homophobic comments about HIV/AIDS left many of his fans and music collaborators alienated.
Taking to Twitter, the rapper tweeted this apology: "Anybody who done ever been effected by AIDS/HIV y'all got the right to be upset, what I said was insensitive even though I have no intentions on offending anybody," DaBaby tweeted. "So my apologies"
Addressing a screaming audience a the Rolling Loud festival in Miami over the weekend, DaBaby took the opportunity to launch into an impromptu homophobic rant, asking people to raise their cellphone lights "if you didn't show up today with HIV/AIDS or other STDs that'll make you die in 2-3 weeks."
He also asked the guys to raise their lights "if you didn't suck a n**** d**k in the parking lot."
The controversial comments have not gone unnoticed by his fans or music collaborators.
DaBaby's "Levitating" collaborator Dua Lipa posted on her Instagram stories shortly after the comments began circulating that she was "surprised" and "horrified" by his actions.
"I really don't recognize this as the person I worked with," she wrote.
She finished by saying, "We need to come together to fight the stigma and ignorance around HIV/AIDS."
Gay icon, legendary singer and HIV/AIDS advocate Elton John also stepped up to condem the rappers comments and tweeted that his actions "fuels stigma and discrimination."
In his apology, DaBaby said about the LGBTQ community, "I ain't trippin on y'all, do you. y'all business is y'all business." But now "y'all business" is his business, too. In the days since his comments, fast fashion brand BoohooMan announced that it is cutting ties with the rapper.
Perhaps it is time for DaBaby to grow up and realize that hateful words have consequences.
