The Boston Gay Men's Chorus Do 'DIVAS'
Kilian Melloy READ TIME: 1 MIN.
You know the names: Cher. Barbra. Judy. Gaga. Now hear their songs celebrated by the Boston Gay Men's Chorus in this year's Pride concert, titled--simply and fittingly--DIVAS.
The BGMC's 150 voices (and a couple dozen dancers) will present perennial gems from 25 divas, including Judy Garland's "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," Karen Carpenter's "Close to You," and Gloria Gaynor's "I WIll Survive," as well as Beyonce's mega-hit "Single Ladies" and Lady's Gaga's infectious "Bad Romance," on Thursday, June 10, at 8:00 p.m.; Friday, June 11, at 8:00 p.m.; and Sunday, June 13, at 7:00 p.m. All three Pride concert performances will take place at the Cutler Majestic Theater, located at 219 Tremont Street in Boston's Theater District.
"These are some of our favorite moments of our favorite divas," said Reuben M. Reynolds III, the BGMC's music director. "Many of these songs are the soundtrack of gay history."
The dancing will be choreographed by Michelle Chasse, whose work has been part and parcel of the Chorus' concerts for years, as well as being featured in local stage productions like RENT, Chess, Le Cabaret Grimm, and many others.
The concert's special musical guests will be Leigh Barrett--a favorite diva of the Boston musical theater scene in her own right--and Claire Philippe, who joined the Chorus for the 2008 Holiday Concert.
Tickets cost $15-$45 and can be obtained online or via Telecharge by calling 800-233-3123. Tickets can also be purchased from the Cutler Majestic Theatre box office. The performances will be sign language interpreted and wheelchair accessible.
