True Blood: The Complete Third Season
Christian Cintron READ TIME: 2 MIN.
"True Blood" is doing everything right. The show keeps delving deeper into the rich world of the supernatural with a sense of humor, biting dialogue, and insane sensual heat. The third season, now available on DVD, introduces gay vampire kings, werewolves (including the uber-sexy Joe Manganiello), and a major secret about Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin).
Season Three picks up with Sookie reeling from the disappearance of her vampire lover Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer). Meanwhile, her house is still trashed, and so is her best friend Tara (Rutina Wesley). Poor Tara's life doesn't get better after losing her boyfriend and everything else in her life.
Season 3 continues to explore the tumultuous lives, complex relationships and sordid adventures of the supernatural residents of Bon Temps, Louisiana. The series does stick closely to Charlaine Harris' novels, so there is the revolving door of mythological creatures and a growing soap opera-style love triangles.
Season three has definitely upped the ante. Denis O'Hare plays Russel Edgington the eccentric and gay king of Mississippi with his eyes set on taking over the U.S. He isn't the season's only gay addition. Kevin Alejandro plays Jesus, a new love interest for Lafayette, and possibly a supernatural being. Joe Manganiello also burns up the screen as Alcide, a new ally and possible flirtation partner for the very popular Ms. Stackhouse. Alexander Skarsgard also continues to play the insanely sexy character Eric Northam, and even manages to swing a gay sex scene worthy of HBO's long and enjoyable history.
The DVD features commentary on episodes with cast members and crew. There are less exciting, but do have some fun anecdotes about the filming and moments with the crew. All of the supplemental material that appeared on HBO is available in the bonus features. This includes the postmortems after each episode and the hilarious pre-season 3 snippets of moments with the characters leading up to the first episode. There is also the inclusion of the insane Snoop Dogg music video, "Oh Sookie."
This is by far the best season of "True Blood" and worth adding to your DVD collection.
