Ellen DeGeneres Fires Back at 'One Million Moms'

On an episode of Ellen DeGeneres' talk show, "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," the comedienne made fun of the anti-gay organization that demanded JC Penney fire the celebrity as its spokeswoman because she is a lesbian, TV NZ reported.

One Million Moms, a division of the conservative American Family Association, said that they would boycott the department store if it did not get rid of DeGeneres. The openly gay talk show host, however, fired back at the organization.

"For those of you are just tuning in for the first time, it's true. I'm gay. I hope you were sitting down," DeGeneres said on her show. "They (One Million Moms) wanted to get me fired and I am proud and happy to say that JC Penney stuck by their decision to make me their spokesperson," she said.

"Funny that JC Penney thinks hiring an open homosexual spokesperson will help their business when most of their customers are traditional families," the million (or so) moms write on their website. "DeGeneres is not a true representation of the type of families that shop at their store. The majority of JC Penney shoppers will be offended and choose to no longer shop there."

The group also said on their Facebook page the department store was "jumping on the pro-gay bandwagon" by hiring DeGeneres.

"Being gay or pro-gay isn't a bandwagon. You don't get a free ride anywhere. There's no music. And occasionally we'll sing 'We Are Family' but that's about it," DeGeneres responded.

"Normally, I try not to pay attention to my haters -- but this time I'd like to talk about it, because my haters are my motivators," she said. "This organization doesn't think I should be the spokesperson because I'm gay. They wanted to get me fired, and I'm proud and happy to say that JC Penney stuck by their decision to make me their spokesperson. Which is great news for me because I also need some new crew socks. I'm really going to clean up with this discount."

DeGeneres then read supportive comments that were left on One Million Moms' Facebook page. One commenter wrote, "I am a Christian and part of a traditional family and I support Ellen and now JC Penney!!!!"

One Million Moms provided phone numbers to the department store on its website and asked its supporters to call and request DeGeneres to be fired. Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) started the "Stand Up for Ellen" campaign, which asks for their supporters to call JC Penney and tell the company that it made the right choice in selecting her as their spokeswoman, EDGE reported.

DeGeneres also applauded the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals' for ruling that Prop. 8 was unconstitutional on the show.
