Brad Pitt's Mom Writes Anti-Gay Letter to Local Newspaper, Supports Romney

Although Brad Pitt and fianc� Angelina Jolie have been strong supporters of LGBT rights, it looks as though the actor's family doesn't share the same views.

The Hollywood Reporter points out that Jane Pitt wrote a letter to the Missouri newspaper the Springfield News-Leader and lashed out against gay marriage and President Barack Obama. The letter was a response to another opinion piece about Christians' rights to refuse to vote for presidential candidate Mitt Romney because he is a Mormon.

Pitt writes, "any Christian should spend much time in prayer before refusing to vote for a family man with high morals, business experience, who is against abortion, and shares Christian conviction concerning homosexuality just because he is a Mormon." She also adds, "any Christian who does not vote or writes in a name is casting a vote for Romney's opponent, Barack Hussein Obama - a man who sat in Jeremiah Wright's church for years, did not hold a public ceremony to mark the National Day of Prayer, and is a liberal who supports the killing of unborn babies and same-sex marriage."

Brad Pitt has been a longtime backer of marriage equality, however. In 2008 the movie star donated $100,000 to fight Proposition 8. Pitt and Jolie stated in the past that, despite being together for several years, they would not tie the knot until same-sex couples had the right to marry.

"I've said that we would not be getting married until everyone in this country had the right to get married," Pitt told Ellen DeGeneres.

In April, however, Pitt, 48, and Jolie, 36, announced that they were engaged and movie star explained that he was feeling pressure from his children about getting married.

"It (marriage) seems to mean more and more to our kids. We made this declaration some time ago that we weren't going to do it 'til everyone can. But I don't think we'll be able to hold out," Pitt told the Hollywood Reporter in an interview.

Pitt also mentioned his mother in the same interview and said, "She's very, very loving -- very open, genuine, and it's hilarious because she always gets painted in the tabloids as a she-devil. There's not an ounce of malice in her. She wants everyone to be happy."

Pitt starred in the West Coast version of the gay marriage play "8" along with George Clooney. The play was created by Dustin Lance Black and portrays the legal argument and witness testimony of the Perry v. Schwarzenegger trail, which helped take down Proposition 8.
