A Queer Eye on Vancouver Cuisine: The Food Gays

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Vancouver's restaurant scene has been described by The New York Times as "truly outstanding." Anthony Bourdain has lavished praise on the "high density of really good cooks and chefs," while USA Today has dubbed the city a "foodie's fantasyland."

Yet perhaps never before has Vancouver cuisine been explored from a perspective like this.

The Food Gays is a new and exceedingly popular local website created by "two fabulous gay men from beautiful Vancouver, who both love all kinds of food." Started just two months ago, the site offers a unique take on local restaurants and cafes, while also serving up new recipes and exploring the intersection of LGBT and foodie culture in Vancouver.

One recent post showed the guys sampling the city's emerging street food scene at the weekly Food Cart Fest at the historic Waldorf Hotel. Throughout the summer, vendors selling everything from wood-fired pizzas to gourmet perogies and freshly squeezed juices converge on the hotel parking lot for a celebration of street eats.

In their latest post, the Food Gays even get tips on eating right and staying fit from Vancouver's most famous transgender beauty queen, Jenna Talackova. Jenna jumped into the headlines earlier this year when she was disqualified from Miss Universe for not being a "naturally born" woman. She was later reinstated and finished in the Top 12.
