The Iconic Joan Rivers Always Had Her Gays

The indomitable Joan Rivers takes the MGM Grand Theater at Foxwoods Resort Casino by storm on Saturday, July 20, at 8 p.m.

Rivers, who is possibly the hardest working person on the planet, is an "Emmy-award-winning television talk-show host, Tony-award-nominated actress, bestselling author, playwright, screenwriter, film director, columnist, lecturer, syndicated radio host, jewelry designer, cosmetic-company entrepreneur and red-carpet fashion laureate has only continued her relevance as evidenced by her growing group of almost two million Twitter followers."

She now had her very own webcast series, "In Bed With Joan." The series showcases celebrities 'coming out of the closet' to talk about their lifestyle and the start of their career. Her own reality TV series, "Joan & Melissa: Joan Knows Best" was recently picked up for a fourth season which will air early 2014.

Joan took time out of her busy schedule to chat with me.

"Work is pleasure. Writing, performing...I love the work. My energy comes from the immigrant work ethic of my family. It's lost in America now. I sound like a PBS Ken Burns special..."

"From the very beginning I've connected with gay guys. My first comedy album was
'Mr. Phyllis and Other Funny Stories'. Mr. Phyllis was my hairdresser. I'd say, 'When his roommate died Mr. Phyllis sold him as pop art." People were shocked.

"Maybe it's the combination of male energy and sensitivity. Or being an outsider. I just know when I look out into an audience and see gay guys in the front row it's going to be a great show."

"Roddy McDowall taught me about balance. Wherever he was, wherever he went, he knew what his friends were doing and they knew what he was doing. He stayed connected."

"There's no more 'women in comedy'-it's just comedy. At the Montreal Comedy Festival this year women host six of the ten events. Tina Fey, Amy Poehler are great. I love Rosie O'Donnell. Sarah Silverman is terrific. I haven't met Wanda Sykes but she is funny-you have to be really smart to be that twisted."

"Donald Trump is wonderful, super-super-smart. He's got a lot of bravado, he's a showman. I talk to him about his hair and he says, "People remember me." He's not a stupid man and so what if he's got an ego. Napoleon had an ego."

"I'm so discouraged with what's happening, especially in New York. Ugh, Weiner and Spitzer leading in the polls. You get what you deserve if you vote for these guys. People should have to pass an IQ test to vote. I was recently Mount Rushmore and thinking about how America is supposed to be, and we instead have Weiner and his erect penis, and Spitzer breaking his own law. Now if a woman did that...hoho..."
