Another Gay Assault in Yemen
EDGE READ TIME: 1 MIN.
Just days after an allegedly gay man was killed by members of the Ansar al-Sharia group, a local branch of Al Qaida, another man accused of being homosexual has been attacked.
According to gulfnews.com, "Mohammad Saeed, 25, was standing outside his home in Huta, the capital of the southern Lahj province, when a gunman shot and wounded him."
The army has been able to regain control of southern regions, which had been overtaken by al Qaeda militants, but random acts of violence continue to emerge. The militants have enforced a strict version of Islamic law, resulting in execution or lashings.
Ansar Al Sharia is the local branch of al Qaeda in Yemen where the network, although weakened, is still active mainly in the southern and eastern parts of the country.
Civil war has plagued Yemen since the South broke away from the united country in 1994. Southern Yemem residents have complained of discrimination ever since.
