Revenge - The Complete Second Season

Michael Cox READ TIME: 2 MIN.

The difference between a revenge tragedy like ABC's smash hit "Revenge" and something like, say, "Hamlet" is this: Even though the Bard's masterpiece is nearly 5 hours long, it has to end at some point -- whereas series television just goes on and on.

Hamlet is tied up in his conscience. "Should I do it? Should I not do it? Maybe I'll just kill myself."

With protagonist Emily Thorn in the second season of this ratings grabber, the question is more of who should I do it to? Not only must Emily plot against the Graysons, the menacing couple who murdered her father to save themselves, it seems there is a mysterious organization called "The Initiative" that is behind the conspiracy.

The season shocker is that Emily's mother is still alive, so maybe Emily isn't an orphan. But the weavings of this plot cleverly look more less like "Hamlet" and more like the revenge tragedy "Medea."

Emily VanCamp as Emily Thorne is as tough and radiant as ever, doing heartless things without ever losing the audience's sympathy. This season she has (yet another) love interest of sorts, ally and ex-lover Aiden Mathis (Barry Sloane).

Nolan Ross (Gabriel Mann), the sexy, nerd-billionare who has nothing better to do than play sidekick to Emily's machinations, takes an interesting turn in character this season. He has always got into a little bit of trouble of his own while sardonically providing us with exposition, but now this sexuality is a bit more fluid: He's less gay and a little more bisexual. When you meet his new CEO, Padma Lahari (Dilshad Vadsaria), you'll understand why.

This 5 disk DVD features all 22 episodes and some cool bonus features, including audio commentary, deleted scenes and bloopers/outtakes, plus a sneak peek at the upcoming tie-in novel "Schooled in Revenge," which is based on the series.
