Log Cabin Republicans Demand Obama Take Action on Russia Laws
Michael Cox READ TIME: 2 MIN.
The Log Cabin Republicans want a clear outline of how the Obama Administration will ensure the safety of LGBT athletes and guests attending the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia. And they want that outline immediately.
Now that the Russian Interior Ministry confirmed that it would enforce the controversial "homosexual propaganda" law, the Winter Games are a priority for the LCR, a group of gay and gay-rights-supporting Republicans.
"The Russian government's statement that no one will be discriminated against at the Winter Olympics is nothing more than a hollow assurance from a governmental body that is so anti-gay it has established a law that allows gays - and gay allies - to be harassed, verbally and physically assaulted, and jailed," LCR Executive Director Gregory T. Angelo released a statement.
Angelo also said the International Olympic Committee "cannot be trusted" due to the fact they have threatened to punish athletes who declare their support for gay rights.
Recent political demonstrations testify to America's frustration with "a President absent of action," Angelo said in the statement.
"President Obama and the State Department need to present a defined plan that guarantees the safety of our nation's Olympic competitors," he said, adding that he wants Obama to pressure the IOC to never put "gay athletes of the world in a situation where their safety is in question ever again."
This isn't the first time the LCR has been critical of Obama over an issue they fundamentally agree on. In May of 2012, the LCR had disparaging words for the President Obama after he voiced his support for same-sex marriage.
"Log Cabin Republicans appreciate that President Obama has finally come in line with leaders like Vice President Dick Cheney on this issue, but LGBT Americans are right to be angry that this calculated announcement comes too late," the LCR released in a statement cited by ABC News. "This administration has manipulated LGBT families for political gain..."
Several months later, the LCR endorsed Mitt Romney for President in spite of his pledge to back a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage if elected.
