Mary Cheney Chides Candidate Sister Liz on Gay Marriage

Wyoming Republican candidate Liz Cheney opposes gay marriage, which doesn't sit well with gay married sister Mary.

Up until recently the outspoken conservative had kept her views pretty much to herself in her bid to unseat incumbent Senator Mike Enzi.

Some media pundits surmised the reason for her silence was that her sister Mary married her long-time partner Heather Poe in 2012. Another is that her father - former VP Dick Cheney - supports gay marriage.

Her silence ended though when Liz, under pressure and trailing in the polls, put out a statement that read: "I am not pro-gay marriage. I believe the issue of marriage must be decided by the states, and by the people in the states, not by judges and not even by legislators, but by the people themselves."

That didn't sit well with Mary, who responded to her sister's views on Facebook, reported the New York Times on Saturday.

"For the record, I love my sister, but she is dead wrong on the issue of marriage," Mary Cheney wrote.

"Freedom means freedom for everyone," she continued.

"That means that all families - regardless of how they look or how they are made - all families are entitled to the same rights, privileges and protections as every other."

In response to Liz's proposal that gay marriage be decided by public plebiscite, Mary said, ""It's not something to be decided by a show of hands."
