Mother Defends Son: He Can't Shoot Children Because He's Gay

The mother of a man accused of critically wounding two girls in a shooting in a Wilkes-Barre, PA apartment complex, defended her son to local media by saying he couldn't have committed the crime because he's gay and "gay people don't shoot kids," Gakwer reports.

"My son is innocent. He's gay. Gay people don't shoot kids. Certain men don't shoot kids," the mother, who has not been identified, added about her son.

Three men were arrested on Aug. 24: Jevaun D, Brown, 24, Taleek T. Sistrunk, 21, both of Wilkes-Barre, Pa., and Trevon Whitaker, 26, of Brooklyn. Whitaker was seen feeling the scene of the shooting at the Sherman Hills apartment complex. Gawker reports that police also detained two women.

The men were first charged with simple assault in connection with an unrelated fight that occurred at the complex the same days as the shooting. Investigators, however, later concluded that evidence revealed that the three men were linked to the shooting, which left two girls, ages two and five, being rushed to the hospital in critical condition.

According to CitizensVoice.com, the shooting occurred around 1:30 p.m. on August 24.

"Obviously, someone victimizing these children, it would have been a random event. However, with the other individuals that may have been in the vicinity, it may not have been," Luzerne County District Attorney Stefanie Salavantis told the website.
