Bronx: Walking Out of the Closet for Natl Coming Out Day

The new Bronx LGBTQ Center (the "Center") is pleased to announce its National Coming Out Day initiative, a community outreach walk that will begin with a "coming out vigil" on Friday, Oct. 11th at 6pm. The group will gather at the East Fordham Road overpass at the Grand Concourse in the Bronx (the intersection of Fordham Road & Grand Concourse on the north side).

An initiative of the Human Rights Campaign, every year on National Coming Out Day we celebrate coming out as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning, or as an ally. On Oct. 11, 2013, we mark the 25th anniversary of National Coming Out Day. This year's theme is "Coming Out Still Matters."

"It's important that we let those who are struggling with their sexual and gender identities know that they are not alone, and that there is support out there for them. We have been through this struggle, and it is a never-ending process but one that empowers and strengthens us each and every time we come out," Tym Moss, the Center's president, stated.

The event will begin with LGBTQ individuals describing his or her own coming out experiences, and relay the importance of why coming out of the closet still matters. Scheduled to speak are award- winning journalist Tanya Domi, Hector Santiago, and the Center's secretary, Peter C. Frank, among others.

Shortly before 7pm, the assembly will begin moving east on Fordham Road and walk toward Fordham University, engaging the community in discussions and distributing helpful literature about coming out, as well as the new Center and its resource. The walk will end no later than 8pm.
