The local community of Overland Park, Kans., has rallied in support of a 20-year-old gay waiter after news got out that restaurant patrons left him an anti-gay message instead of a tip.
According to Kansas' CBS affiliate station KCTV, the man (who remains anonymous) works at a Carrabba's Italian Grill with his mother, who is the restaurant's host. After serving some customers, the waiter reportedly received a note rather than a tip.
"Thank you for your service, it was excellent. That being said, we cannot in good conscience tip you, for your homosexual lifestyle is an affront to GOD. Fags do not share in the wealth of GOD, and you will not share in ours," the note reads. "We hope you will see the tip your faggot choices made you lose out on, and plan accordingly. It is never too late for GOD's love, but none shall be spared for fags. May GOD have mercy on you."
The waiter's story has caught wind on social media websites, like Twitter and Facebook, and supporters are rallying around the young man, including out pastor, Dr. Marvin Baker.
Baker and his partner had lunch at the restaurant this week and asked to sit in the waiter's section.
"I said, 'We are here to meet your celebrity. The one who was mistreated," Baker, who leads a Bible study group for the LGBT community, said he told the waiter's mother. "She said, 'That's my son. Would you like a table or booth?' I said, 'Wherever he's serving.'"
Baker said that the customers were out of line and their actions do not "represent Christianity."
"God really loves us. And God does not advertise or promote hate. That is not love," he said, adding that the waiter says he appreciates the support.
Officials from Carrabba's issued a statement about the incident and said that the Italian food chain does not tolerate discrimination from employees or customers.
"We embrace diversity and believe in treating everyone with respect," the company said.
