Jelly Belly Exec Donates $5K to Anti-LGBT Campaign

A chairman from the Jelly Belly Candy Company has donated thousands of dollars to an anti-LGBT campaign that is currently working to take down a California law that protects transgender children, according to Frontiers, Southern California's largest LGBT magazine.

Herman Rowland Sr., chairman of the famous jellybean company donated $5,000 "to the Privacy for All Students initiative campaign - led by Prop. 8 strategist Frank Schubert, who is now the political director of the National Organization for Marriage," Frontiers writes.

Schubert is working to collect enough signatures to get an initiative on the 2014 ballot to repeal the "School Success and Opportunities Act," which goes into effect Jan. 1 unless Schubert is successful in his efforts. California Gov. Jerry Brown signed the measure in August, which allows transgender students access to whichever restroom and locker room they want.

There is a petition on Change.org telling Rowland to "Stop Hurting Kids."

"Jelly Belly Chair Herman Rowland Sr. is using some of his fortune to fund an effort to overturn California's new School Success and Opportunity Act," the petition reads. "This law ensures that transgender students are allowed to participate in school programs and activities just like every other boy and girl."

As of this writing, the petition has 1,825 supporters and needs 675 more.
