Carrera Campaigns to be Victoria Secret's First Transgender Model
EDGE READ TIME: 1 MIN.
As Victoria's Secret geared up for its 2013 Fashion Show, which filmed Wednesday night in New York, more than 37,000 people signed the petition started by Marco Regalado, a Carmen Carrera fan from Merced, CA, hoping to see Carrera join the VS Angels on the runway.
Since Regalado's petition was launched, both the official Twitter account for RuPaul and "RuPaul's Drag Race" tweeted support for his petition.
"Victoria's Secret is well-known for launching the careers of supermodels and being an iconic American brand," says Regalado. "Victoria's Secret Angels push the barriers whether it's on the runway or in photo shoots -- and that's just what Carmen does! She's a force to be reckoned with and deserves to walk the same runway as legends like Gisele and Heidi Klum."
Carrera has responded to the petition, saying:
"My fans and supporters prove that they have a strong voice and believe in change. I'm proud to have been seen as their first pick for something this major. I'm thankful to have gotten as much support as I've received. I'm hoping that this is a forecast to an equal and loving future."
She's also taken to Facebook to share her thoughts on the petition and has shared the campaign with her more than 59,000 Twitter followers.
