Jason St. Amand READ TIME: 1 MIN.
The Republican mayor of Evansville is joining the opposition to putting Indiana's ban on gay marriage into the state constitution.
A spokeswoman for Evansville Mayor Lloyd Winnecke says he's written a letter to area legislators explaining his opposition to the proposed constitutional amendment.
The Evansville Courier & Press reports (http://bit.ly/1gBiXAt ) Winnecke wrote he considers the amendment unnecessarily divisive and that economic development, jobs and the quality of life are the most important issues for the state's third-largest city.
Republican Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard is also opposing the amendment.
Republican legislative leaders say they expect the General Assembly will vote next year on whether to put the amendment on the November 2014 statewide ballot.
