Dick Cheney: Surprised Daughter Mary 'Attacked' Sister Liz

Former Vice President Dick Cheney said he was "surprised" that his openly lesbian daughter Mary and her wife, Heather Poe, "attacked" her sister Liz on Facebook over their very public feud on marriage equality, ABC News reports.

"We were surprised that there was an attack launched against Liz on Facebook, and wished it hadn't happened," Cheney said at the National Press Club. "It's always been dealt with within the context of the family and frankly that's our preference."

Mary and Liz Cheney's feud started last month when Liz, who is a Wyoming Senate Republican candidate and is challenging Sen. Mike Enzi (R-Wyo.) in the 2014 GOP primary, said that she firmly supports the "traditional" definition of marriage when she appeared on an episode of NBC's "Meet the Press."

Soon after, Mary and Poe took to Facebook to call out Liz and her statements.

"Liz has been a guest in our home, has spent time and shared holidays with our children, and when Mary and I got married in 2012 - she didn't hesitate to tell us how happy she was for us," Poe wrote. "To have her now say she doesn't support our right to marry is offensive to say the least."

Mary wrote her own response, saying, "Liz - this isn't just an issue on which we disagree - you're just wrong - and on the wrong side of history."

Dick Cheney, who has been vocal about his gay marriage support in the past, said that incident is "obviously a difficult thing for a family," but did not say anything more and did not bring up his own position on marriage equality.

"That's as far as I'm going to go on the subject," he said, according to ABC News. "Don't waste your time."
