ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Equality Maryland is endorsing Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown in the state's governor's race.
Carrie Evans, the executive director of the gay rights group, announced Monday that the group met with three Democratic candidates and decided Brown would be the most effective for Equality Maryland issues and the state's residents.
Tim Williams, chair of the group's political action committee, said all three candidates have enthusiastically supported gay rights issues, including Attorney General Doug Gansler and Del. Heather Mizeur.
Gansler became Maryland's first statewide elected official to endorse same-sex marriage in 2008. Mizeur, who is campaigning to become the state's first openly gay governor, has been an advocate for gay rights in the Legislature.
Maryland lawmakers approved same-sex marriage in 2012, and voters approved the measure on the ballot last year.
