'Girls' Creator To Receive Point Foundation Honor

Point Foundation (Point) will present its Horizon Award to Lena Dunham, the Golden Globe Winner and Emmy Nominated Actress and Producer of HBO's "Girls." The Point Horizon Award recognizes a young trailblazer who has taken a leadership role as an advocate of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) community showing unwavering support.
Dunham will receive the award at the Point Honors New York gala on April 7, held at the New York Public Library on Fifth Avenue. The landmark venue speaks to the education-focused mission of Point Foundation, which is the nation's largest scholarship-granting organization for LGBTQ students of merit.
"There is no one better at conveying the ambition of today's young adults to overcome obstacles and realize their great potential than Lena Dunham," said Jorge Valencia, Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of Point Foundation. "Dunham uses intelligent humor and compassion to present an honest appraisal of something our Point Scholars know all too well: the struggle to be comfortable in your own skin. Thanks to Dunham and HBO, millions of young people today feel validated by seeing poignant reflections of their own lives on each episode of 'Girls.'"
Also being honored at the April 7 Point Honors gala is acclaimed TV Producer, educator and M.D., Neal Baer, who will receive the Point Leadership Award. Dr. Baer, the Executive Producer and Showrunner for the current CBS hit television show "Under The Dome," will be presented with the award by the Emmy and Golden Globe award-winning actress Mariska Hargitay.
The Honorary Co-Chairs for Point Honors New York are Judith Light, Herb Hamsher, and David Mixner. Additional talent appearing at the event will be announced soon. Some of Point's 78 current scholars and 165 alumni will share with the audience their inspiring stories about the challenges they have faced.
