Mich. Lesbian Says She Was Attacked After Appearing on TV

A 28-year-old Michigan woman who married her partner in Michigan last month says she was attacked and knocked unconscious by a group of men after she appeared on TV and gave an interview about her marriage, Reuters reports.

According to the Washtenaw County Sherriff's office, the woman got off a bus Monday when three men confronted her. Derrick Jackson, a spokesman for the sheriff's office, said the woman said one of the men shouted, "Hey bitch, are you that faggot from the news?"

She was then allegedly punched in the face and fell to the ground unconscious, Jackson said, according to Reuters. The woman was treated at a nearby hospital for bruises and welling to her face and abdomen and later released.

Jackson said the woman said she rides the same bus daily but did not recognize the men.

The woman tied the knot with her partner on March 22 in Washtenaw County, one of the four counties that allowed same-sex couples to marry for a short time after a federal judge ruled that Michigan's ban on gay marriage was unconstitutional. More than 300 same-sex couples were wed before a federal appeals court placed a stay on the judge's ruling. Gay marriage has been put on hold until an appeal is heard. Additionally, Michigan won't recognize the marriages but the federal government will.

Since the woman and her partner were part of the large marriage ceremony, her image was aired on local news stations, according to Reuters.

Police are reportedly searching for the attackers.
