NC Teen Kicked Out of Prom For Wearing Pants

A North Carolina high school senior says school officials kicked her out of her prom last weekend for wearing a pair of red skinny jeans, Charlotte, N.C., CBS-affiliate WBTV reports.

When Shafer Rupard attended her Cherryville High School senior prom at Cherryville Golf & Country Club last weekend, a teacher allegedly told the student she had a problem with what she was wearing - pants.

"The teacher tapped me on the shoulder and said she had a problem with what I was wearing," Rupard told WBTV. "I thought it was because of the hat or the leather jacket and I was like well I'll take those off and she was like no, it's the pants."

Rupard says she was only at the prom for about five-minutes before getting the boot.

Rupard's mother, Shawn McQuaige, takes with the teacher's alleged decision to boot her daughter, and says wearing pants to prom is just fine.

"It's just the way she's always been and she wanted to feel comfortable in her own skin," McQuaige said.

Rupard called the incident "a slap in the face" and thinks the decision is ridiculous. McQuaige agrees.

"We want to put out the message to all teenagers that you should be allowed to be yourself," Rupard's mother told the news station, adding that she talked to school officials to get to the bottom as to why her daughter was kicked out of the dance.

"We looked in the student code of conduct book and there isn't a dress code at all," Rupard said.

McQuaige said she even talked to Cherryville High's assistant principal about the dress code.

"She looked at it with me and she said you know what, you're right there is no dress code here."

Rupard says she's yet to get an apology or any response from school officials even though she emailed them last week.
