The German Football Federation has opened an investigation after a homophobic sign was seen in the stands during Bayer Leverkusen's last match of the season.
The federation says it has asked Leverkusen for a statement on the incident recorded in the match against Werder Bremen.
Leverkusen spokesman Meinolf Sprink says the club is "ashamed" about the incident. Local media say Leverkusen fans had displayed similar signs during some of the team's previous matches.
The club faces a fine. Leverkusen finished fourth in the Bundesliga and will play in the qualifiers for the Champions League.
