With the World Cup dawning on us, you can't get away from the hype of the quadrennial event, so why not join it? As the gay capital of South America, Brazil is teeming with opportunities for fun with and without the football, and here are just a few tips for the best LGBT spots in town.

Stay in Style
Before you start jetting off to the gay capital, you'll want to do a little research online, and we're talking about more than just keeping an eye on the movement of World Cup betting odds to pick your favorite to win. Thankfully, the Internet is awash with travellers' guides on the best accommodation in Brazil, such as Gay Travel Brazil, which features reviews on the most gay-friendly hotels around the country.

Our personal favourite is the Acapulco Copacabana Hotel in Rio de Janeiro, which features super modern decor and exquisite restaurants.

Be Proud
If you're tired of all the football, get yourself over to the 18th edition of Sao Paulo Pride, which coincides with the big games from June 12 - July 15. With last year's event attracting more than 4.5 million visitors, the event has been named officially by the Guinness Book of World Records as the world's largest LGBT pride event, so there's no excuse not to get down there and meet some new faces.

There's nowhere quite like Brazil for an unforgettable nightlife and the Rio region has some of the world's most renowned gay bars. Head over to what some call Rio's best nightclub, 'The Week' on Rua Sacadura Cabral 154, Centro, which features exotic dancers, top DJs and elegant ambience.

Cabaret fans can get their Liza Minelli on at the Cabaret Casanova at Av Mem de Sa 25, Lapa, which features members of both the gay and straight community and plenty of drag queens. If you feel like staying up really late, don't miss the chance to party at Dama de Ferro, the quirkily designed nightclub which celebrates gay icons and culture.

Last but by no means least, you went out there for a reason, so whether you're gay or straight, there's no excuse not to go and support your team at the matches.
