N. Calif. Man Sentenced to 400+ Years for Gang Rape of Lesbian

A Northern California man who headed a 2008 gang rape of a woman allegedly targeted because she is lesbian, was sentenced Friday to more than 400 years in prison, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Humberto Salvador, 36, of Richmond, Calif., was found guilty of rape in concert, forcible oral copulation in concert, kidnapping for sexual purposes and kidnapping for the purpose of carjacking last December. He was sentenced to 411 years to life in prison last week by Judge Susanne Fenstermacher.

The victim did not appear in court, but prosecutor Melissa Smith read a statement by her partner, the Chronicle reports.

"She has lost the will to live," the statement read. "Although she is alive, they killed her inside."

The attack occurred on Dec. 13, 2008 at 9:30 p.m. when the victim walked into her apartment. Salvador was accused of hitting her with a flashlight and robbing her before he told her to remove her clothes. She was then sexually assaulted and then forced into her car.

According to authorities, Salvador and two other gang members, Robert Ortiz and Darrell Hodges (both 20), drove her seven blocks away and repeatedly sexually assaulted her in her car.

Ortiz previously pleaded guilty to forcible oral copulation in concert in exchange for a 31-year sentence. Hodges pleaded guilty to forced oral copulation and was hit with a 24-year sentence. A fourth defendant, Josue Gonzales, who testified against Salvador, pleaded guilty to carjacking and robbery. He was sentenced to 13 years in prison.
