This Day in June

The Pride Parade is an adult event that has been altered to allow kids to attend with their families. While this book purports to view the Pride Parade from a child's perspective, it would be more accurate to say that the book breaks down the elements of Pride to better understand why Pride exists. This examination is suitable for everyone, young or otherwise. The text of Gayle E. Pitman's flows like poetry from page to page and is partnered with the joyous illustrations by Kristyna Litten.

Each page is devoted to a different aspect of Pride from Dykes on Bikes to Drag Queens. It depicts everyone reveling in a family-friendly, good time. While illustrations are race inclusive, a majority of the drawn characters are White. Happily, characters range across the gender spectrum (including gender queer). "This Day in June" doesn't necessarily reflect the actual experience for an individual but it does capture the essence of what Pride is: a celebration of equality and personal freedom to live and love as we wish.

Important features include a "Reading Guide" to explain in greater detail the story and vivid artwork. There is a "Note to Parents and Caregivers" that offers ways to explain sexual orientation and the necessity of Pride to kids. There are sub-sections that include discussion topics appropriate for each age group from age 3 to 18.
