On January 20, 2026, Grammy-winning transgender pop artist Kim Petras took to social media to publicly denounce her record label, Republic Records, over what she characterized as systematic obstruction of her creative output and financial mismanagement.

In a series of posts, the 33-year-old artist revealed that her album "Detour"has been completed for six months but remains unreleased due to label obstruction. Petras stated that Republic Records "refused to give a release date"and "has refused to pay her collaborators"for their work on the project. The album features production from Frost Children, Nightfeelings, and transgender producer Margo XS, representing a departure from her previous work with Dr. Luke.

Beyond the album delays, Petras disclosed additional grievances regarding music video releases. She revealed that she self-funded and filmed a music video two months prior but the label withheld a release date for the accompanying single. Describing the video's production value, Petras wrote: "Best MV I've ever done btw. .. 9 looks 6 setups 13 pairs of shoes. .. "

Petras expressed frustration over her lack of creative autonomy, stating: "I'm tired of having no control over my own life or career. I want to continue to self fund and self curate my own music. This is why I have formally requested to be dropped by @RepublicRecords. " Her statement reflects broader industry tensions between artists and major labels regarding creative control in the streaming era.

Throughout 2025, Petras continued releasing music independently of major label support, with singles including "Polo, " "Freak It, "and "I Like Ur Look. " Her last full-length album, "Problématique, "was released in 2023, followed by the "Slut Pop Miami"EP in 2024.

In her public statement, Petras also critiqued label priorities, asserting that major labels lack interest in supporting diverse artistic visions. Despite these obstacles, Petras committed to her fanbase, declaring: "My fans have waited long enough. I love you guys. I'm dropping 'Detour'regardless. "

Republic Records has not publicly responded to Petras's allegations as of the time of reporting. Petras's public dispute with her label joins a growing pattern of high-profile artists, including Halsey, speaking out against major label restrictions on creative output and financial practices.
