Mitski Announces Eighth Studio Album 'Nothing’s About to Happen to Me' with Lead Single 'Where’s My Phone?'
READ TIME: 2 MIN.
Mitski, the acclaimed indie rock artist known for her introspective songwriting, announced her eighth studio album, Nothing’s About to Happen to Me, on January 16, 2026. The album is scheduled for release on February 27, 2026, through Dead Oceans, marking nearly four years since her previous effort, The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We, from 2023.
Teasers for the album began appearing on Mitski's Instagram on January 13, 2026, with posts showing her cooking in a kitchen, followed by another on January 14 depicting her entering a front door, collapsing, and whispering the album title. She shared the official release date on January 15. Alongside the full announcement, Mitski released the lead single "Where’s My Phone? "on January 16, 2026, accompanied by a music video directed by Noel Paul.
The single, described as a three-minute indie-rock track infused with anxiety, opens with distorted electric guitars and Mitski repeating the chorus: "Where did it go? / Where’s my phone? / Where’s my phone? / Where did I leave? / Where’d I go? / Where’d I go? " Lyrics explore themes of technological dependency, mental distress, and escapism, with lines like "I just want my mind to be a clear glass / Clear glass with nothing in my head / I keep thinking, 'Surely, somebody will save me.' "
The music video portrays Mitski as a paranoid woman in a gothic house, protecting her sister from absurd human obstacles, drawing inspiration from Shirley Jackson’s novel We Have Always Lived in the Castle. Critics have likened its frantic, emotionally kaleidoscopic style to elements of Darren Aronofsky’s Mother! and Grey Gardens. The video has amassed over 500, 000 views in its first 48 hours.
According to a press release, Nothing’s About to Happen to Me immerses listeners in a narrative about a reclusive woman in an unkempt house: "Outside of her home, she is a deviant; inside of her home, she is free. " The album features 11 tracks, all written by Mitski, with live band instrumentation from her Land touring band, orchestral arrangements by Drew Erickson, production and engineering by Patrick Hyland, and mastering by Bob Weston. The tracklist includes: 1. In a Lake, 2. Where’s My Phone? , 3. Cats, 4. If I Leave, 5. Dead Women, 6. Instead of Here, 7. I’ll Change for You, 8. Rules, 9. That White Cat, 10. Charon’s Obol, 11. Lightning.
Mitski, whose work often resonates deeply within LGBTQ+ communities for its raw exploration of identity, isolation, and emotional vulnerability, continues to captivate with themes that affirm personal struggles and inner sanctuaries. Publications like Rolling Stone have hailed her as "the most alluring and enigmatic musician in indie rock, "underscoring her influence. Pre-save and pre-order options are available on platforms including Spotify, Bandcamp, and the Secretly Store. This release follows Mitski's recent projects, including a pop-turned-performance art tour, a live album and film from that tour, and contributions to a stage musical adaptation of The Queen’s Gambit.
