Twittersphere Slams ESPN Over Showering with Michael Sam Segment
EDGE READ TIME: 2 MIN.
UPDATE
On Wednesday, ESPN issued the following apology.
"ESPN regrets the manner in which we presented our report. Clearly yesterday we collectively failed to meet the standards we have set in reporting on LGBT-related topics in sports."
As news that Michael Sam made the first cut after the St. Louis Rams reduced their team roster down to the league maximum of 75 players, an ESPN reporter remains more interested in the athlete's off-field performance as the only out gay member in a presumably straight locker room, Yahoo Sports reports.
Sports reporting hit a new low last week when reporter Josina Anderson took time out of a segment aired on ESPN about how Sam is adjusting to life in the NFL to focus on how his teammates are handling being in the shower with a gay player.
In the report, Anderson said: "Another Rams defensive player told me 'Sam is respecting our space' And that from his perspective, he seems to think that Michael Sam is waiting to kind of take a shower, as not to make his teammates feel uncomfortable."
Anderson then polled two other players about Sam's showering habits only to hear "they weren't tracking that."
"[Defensive tackle Kendall Langford] told me, 'Listen, I have not been in the shower at the same time as Michael Sam.'"
Anderson then stated, "He said there definitely could be a million reasons as to why that is. He said he could be doing extra work on the practice field, he could be riding his bike, he could be doing extra cardio."
NewNowNext reports that the response to Anderson's report have been negative.
Rams defensive end Chris Long, tweeted:
Dear ESPN, Everyone but you is over it.
Patrick Burke of the You Can Play Project tweeted:
ESPN asking players if they are or aren't showering with Mike Sam is so far out of bounds they aren't even in the stadium anymore.
International Business Times published a series of tweets all condemning ESPN's reporting:
"Michael Sam shower reports on ESPN? Close it down. We're done."
"Reporting on Michael Sam's showering habits might be the dumbest thing I've ever heard."
"Really? Are we really REPORTING on whether or not Michael Sam has showered with his teammates? Just stop."
"Is Michael Sam #TeamWashcloth or #TeamLoofah? #ESPN"
