Kilian Melloy READ TIME: 2 MIN.
If you're a South Florida designer looking to be the next Project Runway star, take notes and learn from the fifteen designers competing to be the next Heat of Fashion Design Star. The Heat of Fashion Designer Competition on September 6 will have the top fifteen compete in a semi-final round with their work showcased on a mannequin. Then, on September 20, the grand finalists will compete against one another in a hot runway fashion show. Both of these events start at 6 p.m. and will be held at the Level 5 Oceanfront Terrace at the Atlantic Hotel and Spa (601 N. Fort Lauderdale Beach Blvd., Fort Lauderdale).
Untitled-1The Heat of Fashion Designer Competition looks to recognize and promote up-and-coming talent particularly skilled in the field of fashion design. This organization hopes to give back to these new faces by giving them publicity and exposure, and hopefully with it a chance to earn contracts from potential buyers and a chance to continue making designs and marketing collections for years to come.
On the night of the first round of competition, there will be a complimentary cocktail reception, a meet and greet with the judges, and finally the main event, which will end with the finalist selection. In the final round of competition, each designer is asked to present five of their best designs from their collection within three to five minutes. The judges will then decide whose talent is best. The designers can present a men's or women's line, and can present any works they like in the following genres: avant-garde, haute couture, ready-to-wear, swimwear, or wedding. In addition to the runway show, there will also be a showcase of works by student designers and recent graduates, and work done by professional make-up and hair stylists.
First prize at the end of the final contest on September 20 will be a $1000 cash prize, a catalog photoshoot, a TV and a radio commercial, and the outfits that were deemed first prize will be given front-window placement in a South Florida boutique. The second place winner will earn a catalog photoshoot as well, and a trophy.
Tickets cost $10 for the semi-finals on September 6 and $25 for the final runway show on September 20. VIP tickets are available for the final round for $45 and those tickets include goodie bags and a seat adjacent to the runway. These tickets can be bought online via EventBrite; the link is available at heatoffashion.com.
The Heat of Fashion Designer Competition is co-sponsored by The Atlantic Hotel and Spa and Beauty and the Feast Bar and Kitchen. For more information, e-mail [email protected] or call (954) 226-1407.
