NY Fashion Week: Grungy Gentleman Goes Athletic Luxe
Ian Michael Crumm READ TIME: 2 MIN.
Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week continues and throngs of fashionistas and their wannabe counterparts are clamoring to shows to get a first look at what's hot for Spring 2015.
For those who need a Fashion Week 101, there are two major ways to present a collection: either a runway show or a presentation. During presentations, attendees walk around and view designs on their own time - in contrast to a runway show where the designer controls how long something appears on the catwalk. Presentations tend to get packed, and in the technology era when attendees are snapping Instagram and Twitpics of their favorite looks, you could easily get jostled to the back or find yourself trying to view garments from the bathroom.
The Grungy Gentleman show was no different as guests waited more than an hour to get into the venue, but it was well worth the wait.
Jace Lipstein, founder and designer behind Grungy Gentleman, said, "For our debut collection, Grungy Gentleman will be taking an athletic approach to dressing by mixing traditional tailored menswear with technical luxe fabrications." Keeping with the elevated athletic theme, Grungy Gentleman collaborated with heritage brand Mitchell & Ness on five limited edition pieces: a luxe varsity bomber jacket, a graphic T-shirt, two baseball hats and a beanie that all showcase a color story of black, white, gray, oxblood and cobalt blue.
The presentation featured a pair of red jogger pants with a black and white ankle pants paired with a red cardigan with leather patchwork sleeves. Gorgeous. Black baseball caps from the Mitchell & Ness collaboration had pinstripe white lines along the base and bill; another black and white printed element this Fashion Week.
The collection oozed a relaxed coolness with a sense of menswear formality. One key piece was a simple black car coat. Not groundbreaking, but a staple piece for any man. Styled with the Mitchell & Ness beanie and navy athletic ankle cuffed pants, the look is the new take on menswear: athletic luxe. The collection was styled by Nik Screws.
What piece do we predict from The Grungy Gentleman will be most in vogue this year? The black and white varsity bomber jacket - who doesn't want a "G" on his chest symbolizing "Gentleman"? We'll take one!
Certain pieces from the collection are available now on Grungy Gentleman.
