'Duck Dynasty' Patriarch Calls AIDS God's Punishment
Bobby McGuire READ TIME: 2 MIN.
Here we go again.
AIDS is God's punishment for homosexual behavior. Or so Phil "Duck Dynasty" Robertson says. Hardly original, however, it seems as though every time the reality TV patriarch has something to plug, like his ratings-deprived sixth season TV show or most recently, his straight-to-the-99-cent-bin book, he drags out his best "tried and true" homophobic rhetoric.
You're scraping the barrel, Phil.
In a recent interview with Tony Perkins, head of the SPLC designated anti-gay hate group Family Research Center, during a book tour to plug his presumably ghostwritten tome "UnPhiltered," Robertson wasted little time before diving head first into his favorite homophobia swimmin' hole.
"God says, 'One woman, one man,' and everyone says, 'Oh, that's old hat, that's that old Bible stuff,'" said Robertson. "But I'm thinking, well let's see now. A clean guy - a disease-free guy and a disease-free woman - they marry and they keep their sex between the two of them. They're not going to get chlamydia, and gonorrhea, and syphilis, and AIDS. It's safe."
He continued: "To me, either it's the wildest coincidence ever that horrible diseases follow immoral conduct, or, it's God saying, 'There's a penalty for that kind of conduct.' I'm leaning towards there's a penalty toward it."
Robertson made no mention of lesbians, who statistically have the lowest incidence of sexually transmitted disease.
This latest anti-gay comment is typical of Robertson. In 2013, he made headlines for his statements during an interview with GQ, in which he likened homosexual behavior to beastiality. Those statements landed him in the hot seat with the A&E Network who briefly suspended him from filming "Duck Dynasty."
During last week's interview, Perkins was quick to commend Robertson, saying that his past comments have helped "the popularity of the Robertson family."
Apparently, Perkins must not look at declining audience numbers. "Duck Dynasty"'s ratings have continued to slide from an all-time record high of 11.77 million viewers in August 2013 to a mere 4.3 million viewers for the debut of the show's sixth season in June of this year.
Stay tuned for more ignorance as Robertson continues on his nation-wide book tour. His book "UnPhiltered" can be found in the "Literature for people who can't read" section of better bookstores across America.
