An Indian transgender woman, who was disabled, died Wednesday after two youths allegedly pushed her in front of a moving train, the New Indian Express reports.
Only identified as Mahadevi, the 22-year-old woman, who was speech impaired and used to beg on the Bangalore-Hubli Intercity Express, died instantly. According to the Indian newspaper, Deccan Herald, police say the incident occurred around 2 p.m. Wednesday, soon after the train departed Mantri Square in India.
According to the newspaper, Mahadevi was allegedly "troubling a few passengers on the train. They caught her and wanted to hand her over to police." But before that could happen, two people intervened and started to fight with her.
They then pushed Mahadevi out before the train reached the station. According to an eyewitness, Mahadevi fell on a parallel track, the Indian Express notes. The newspaper also reports the passengers on the train caught the two young men and "trashed them," and planned to turn them into the authorities. The suspects, however, escaped when the train came to a stop.
"We registered a case of unnatural death and shifted the body to Victoria Hospital for post mortem," an official of the railway police said. "Investigation is on to ascertain if Mahadevi fell down from the train or was pushed out."
The Indian Express reports a boy who sells tea on the train informed Mahadevi's community of her death. Friends rushed to the scene but railway police did not provide any other details of the incident.
