American Horror Story: Coven

Before you get engrossed in the circus tent of "American Horror Story: Freak Show" check out the season that changed it all "American Horror Story: Coven." This season, available on Blu-ray brings all the actors you loved from the first two season and acting heavyweights Kathy Bates and Angela Bassett. Witches, New Orleans, and the bitchy repartee you've come to expect from Ryan Murphy.
The Blu-ray has some special features which is a plus considering it is such a short season. However, with only three featurettes it's a little tough to get too excited. It's sad that there are no deleted scenes or bloopers considering the immense talent of the cast. It's also disappointing that there isn't much in-depth discussion of the series. That being said, there is some entertainment value to the special features.
"Enter the Coven" features a season-long retrospective of the cast and creators discussing the show. It features interviews with all your favorite actresses on the show and even Stevie Nicks. What's really different is that the writers and cast talk about certain key plot points. The moment when the writers confessed even they don't know what is going to happen is memorable. Depending on how you feel about the season, it's pretty telling.
"Meet Ms. Nola" was like an interactive tour of New Orleans. It's a pretty meaty featurette as far as bonus features go. It touches on some of the people on whom key characters of the show were based. It profiles the amazing locations and describes the city itself. It's like a free trip. It also helps enrich the series by giving some context to the city's culture and history.
"Zombie Halloween" profiles the one episode that gratuitously used zombies. It features Angela Bassett's first time working with a snake and zombie actors given free rein to make the zombies their own. The only disappointing part is this level of detailed insight isn't given to other episodes of the show.
"AHS: Coven" is unique in that it brings a little levity, humor, and light to a very dark and macabre franchise. It introduces new blood with Bassett, Bates, and Emma Roberts. The bonus features aren't a huge selling point but they do make the season even better.
