Some Colorado Clerks Waiting for Court Actions

Clerks in some of Colorado's largest counties are waiting for final court orders before issuing marriage licenses to gay couples.

State Attorney General John Suthers, Gov. John Hickenlooper and clerks in Adams, Boulder, Denver and Jefferson counties are both asking the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals and the Colorado Supreme Court to lift stays that still technically prevent them from issuing the licenses. They're also asking for appeals of gay marriage cases in federal and state court to be dismissed.

Suthers' office says these final steps are needed to achieve "finality and clarity to Colorado's laws."

Boulder County clerk Hillary Hall says she expects the courts to act quickly.

With no court orders previously issued against them, clerks in Larimer and Pueblo counties began issuing same-sex marriage licenses Monday.
