PopUps: Nick Jonas Opens Up on Playing Gay Character
Jason St. Amand READ TIME: 2 MIN.
Former Jonas Brother member Nick Jonas has had a great big gay year while promoting his solo effort and new album "Nick Jonas." If he's not having an impromptu strip tease at a gay club, or grabbing his crotch in a photo shoot, then he's checking out celebs' bulges or just being sexy because he's undergone a hunky transformation.
But his possible queer-bating ways have boiled over into his acting career after it was revealed this week that his character in the DirectTV MMA drama "Kingdom" is gay. In the series' Dec. 10 season finale, Jonas' character, Nate Kulia, is kicked out of a gay bar then hooks up with another dude.
The "Jealous" singer opened up about his role with BuzzFeed Wednesday, saying he knew his character's sexuality before even shooting "Kingdom."
"Everyone at Kingdom was really transparent about the character and some of the things the character would go through. And in my prep work, I wanted to be aware so I could properly tell this story," Jonas, 22, told BuzzFeed.
In the interview, it is revealed that Kulia's friends and family will react to his coming out next season but Jonas said his real life family (like brothers Joe and Kevin?!) was supportive of him playing a gay character.
"Their reaction was incredible," he said. "My family was really proud of me for getting this role and they were excited for me to tell this story -- especially because it's so important."
Jonas also talks about how the role was important to him because of his LGBT fans.
"I've really been trying to make an effort to talk with my gay fan base and find unique opportunities to set up the next chapter of my life and my career with them in it," Jonas told BuzzFeed. "The attitude I take in the stories I want to share and my personal life and my view is that I think we're in a time where there's a new progression. For all people of all walks of life to accept all people ... I'd be thrilled if I'm any part of that."
You now may be asking yourself, "Does that mean he's going to have some steamy gay sex scenes in the next season of 'Kingdom'?"
I'll let the singer clear that up for you:
"... It's my responsibility as an actor to be that person and tell those stories the best I can. So, absolutely I will do all I need to do," he said.
Looks like some of us are going to have to do some binge-watching.
