Out Brazilian model Harry Louis, who happens to be fashion designer Marc Jacobs' ex-boyfriend, said Wednesday he was discriminated against by a Starbucks barista who allegedly told him to "become a man." He also said he plans to sue the coffee company, according to Gay Star News.
The news site reports that Louis wanted a cup of coffee while he was waiting for his connecting flight at the Sao Paulo-Guarulhos International Airport Wednesday morning. But the Starbucks in the airport wasn't opened at 7 a.m., so he asked an employee, who was setting up the store, when he could buy coffee.
The model claims the worker told him if he wanted one, he should "put on an apron."
"I said no, it wouldn't be a good look on me, and she snapped saying 'Become a man and then I won't offer you my apron!' " Louis said, according to GSN. "I felt humiliated, because there was a line of people watching the scene."
A representative for Starbucks spoke out about the incident, saying they were "very concerned," by Louis' report.
"We are actively investigating the incident," they said, according to GSN. "We do not tolerate any discrimination against customers, so we are taking the necessary steps to investigate the case and make this right effective."
They added: "Such behavior does not reflect our values that value by treating everyone with dignity and respect."
Louis said he plans on filing a lawsuit against the mega coffee company over the "humiliating" incident. The model posted about the incident on his Instagram:
Starbucks has had a fantastic rapport with the LGBT community, firmly supporting same-sex marriage in Washington state, where the company is based, and marriage equality in the workplace. The Human Rights Campaign gives Starbucks a 100 rating for workplace equality.
