Alabama: There Would Be Conflict if Gay Marriage Allowed

The Alabama attorney general's office argues the state will be thrown into confusion and conflict if same-sex weddings begin next week
State lawyers in a Monday court filing with the 11th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals in Atlanta reiterated their request for a hold on a judge's decisions striking down Alabama's ban on gay marriage.
State lawyers said there could be disagreement over the issuance of marriage licenses.
U.S. District Judge Callie Granade put a stay on her decision overturning the ban until Feb. 9. Alabama asked to extend the stay until the U.S. Supreme Court takes up the issue of gay marriage later this year.
Lawyers for the couple that challenged the ban have said gay families have been waiting too long without the legal protection of marriage.
