PopUps: 'Empire' Soundtrack Blocks Madonna from No. 1 Album

First it was multiple leaks of her then unfinished album.

Then it was a (fake?) fall at the BRIT Awards.

For Madonna, 2015 has gotten off to a rocky start, especially when it came to her 13th album, "Rebel Heart," which dropped Tuesday. But now the Material Girl can add another thing that's making her new year not all that great: Fox's mega breakout hit "Empire."

Billboard revealed Wednesday the musical drama's soundtrack, which features the pulsing "Drip Drop," blocked Madonna from having the No. 1 album in America this week.

For days, "Rebel Heart" and the "Empire" soundtrack were battling it out but it was revealed Wednesday that the series' Season One soundtrack beat out the Queen of Pop's latest effort on Billboard's 200 chart, selling just more than 10,000 copies.

"Rebel Heart" sold a respectable 121,000 copies this week and debuted at No. 2. Empire sold 130,000 units.

As Billboard points out, "Empire" is the first TV soundtrack to debut at No. 1 since 2010 with Fox's last earth shattering hit, "Glee."

But maybe there's some Madonna / "Empire" synergy after all, as it was recently revealed that "Empire" star Terrance Howard will also star in the pop icon's new music video for the single "Ghost Town," Noise11 reports. The video is being directed by Jonas �kerlund, who also directed "Ray Of Light," Music" and "American Life."

Madonna's last five albums ("MDNA," "Hard Candy," "Confessions on a Dance Floor," "American Life" and "Music") have all gone to No. 1. Her last No. 2 album on the charts was "Ray of Light" back in 1998.
