Bad Behavior Lands Madonna in Hot Water with 'Hamilton' Creator
EDGE READ TIME: 2 MIN.
Someone needs to teach Madonna how to behave during a live performance.
Madonna got an indirect lesson in theater etiquette Saturday night when Lin Manuel Miranda, the star and creator of the Off-Broadway musical "Hamilton" told management at The Public Theater in New York that the Material Girl was not welcome backstage after the performance due to her bad behavior during the show.
Playbill.com reports that following Saturday evening's performance of "Hamilton," Miranda took to Twitter to give Madonna a slap on the wrist via social media.
"Tonight was the first time I asked stage management NOT to allow a celebrity (who was texting all through Act 2) backstage. #noselfieforyou"
He tweeted.
A few hours prior to his public spanking of Madonna, Miranda and the cast played host backstage to First Lady Michelle Obama who attended Saturday's matinee performance.
Although Miranda deleted his tweet, an audience member published the following message:
"That time you want to smack #Madonna upside the head for texting during the best show I've ever seen. #HAMILTONpublic"
So, what did Madonna do to piss off the Tony Award-winner? According to sources close to Playbill, she showed up late to the show, took out her phone several times during the first act and continued to use it during the second act of the play; distracting fellow audience members in the intimate theater with the hand-held device's bright ambient glow.
As one of the busiest seasons in recent Broadway history that boasted close to ten mostly well-received new musicals wraps up, it has been Miranda's "Hamilton" off-Broadway that has stolen all of the thunder from the Great White Way. Its twice-extended sold-out run has become the hottest ticket in New York in decades with seats for the remainder of the run going on StubHub for anywhere between $400 to $900.
