New Wine App Predicts Your Palate

READ TIME: 3 MIN.

Is there a foolproof way to determine if you'll like a bottle of wine before you open it? Wine Ring, a leader in personal tech for wine, says yes. Today Wine Ring has introduced a free iOS app that uses patented, highly sophisticated learning algorithms to capture personal preferences and then identify precisely which wines an individual or group of people will like, eliminating uncertainty in choosing wine.

The breakthrough comes as consumers are increasingly making wine a part of everyday life. Wine Ring states that consumption in the United States has been increasing for 20 years, and the market is now the world's largest, valued at $36 billion. There are now nearly 100 million wine drinkers in the U.S., and another 30 million in the world's second largest wine market by value -- the United Kingdom.

While research indicates consumers are eager to discover new wines, the vast majority describe choosing wine as confusing and overwhelming. Most consumers struggle to understand wine because so many grapes, geographies and producers are unknown to them. Consequently, wine consumers are relegated to recommendations based on someone else's preferences, or confined to their usual go-to wines.

Wine Ring's patented technology -- which was developed by Ph.D.s in physiology and mathematics, together with Masters of Wine -- identifies a consumer's patterns of preference and makes recommendations based on them. They claim it is the only app that will tell you if you'll like a wine before you buy it.

Here's how it works: When a consumer tastes a wine, he or she simply tells the Wine Ring app if it's a Love, Like, SoSo, or Dislike. The app immediately builds a preference profile that updates every time a user rates another wine, evolving as the user's preferences do. Wine Ring's technology can determine basic preferences with as few as a handful of ratings.

A core aspect of the Wine Ring philosophy is to ascertain preference from what consumers instinctively know about wine, without asking them to self-assess in any way. This approach is markedly different from other apps, which use wine characteristics to product match, or attempt to determine preference via the results of superficial quizzes about coffee or chocolate.

Individual preference profiles enable the patented Wine Ring technology to deliver a range of unique recommendation functionalities, including answering the one question a wine consumer really wants an answer for: Will I like it?

Internationally acclaimed chef and restaurant owner Jean Georges says, "What Wine Ring has done is extraordinary. It facilitates our ability to offer our guests a more personalized experience and engage with our staff in a whole new way. I'm thrilled to be one of the first to incorporate it in my restaurants."

In addition to answering the question, "Will I like it?" the Wine Ring app also incorporates these features:

Real-Time Label Recognition
Take a photo of a wine label and get instant wine identification and preference functionality.

Individual and Group Recommendations
Wine Ring makes recommendations for individuals and groups based on personal preferences. Users can prioritize a user for a group recommendation, such as a friend or family member. Can also be used for gift giving.

Journal
Wine Ring automatically keeps a journal of all the wines a user rates and offers the ability to add personal notes for each wine. Users can share their wine notes with friends via social media.

Preference Profile
Wing Ring has developed preference styles across Red, White, Ros, Sparkling and Fortified wines so consumers know the styles they prefer and those they don't.

Fast Tracks
Fast Tracks are an easy way to a jump-start a Preference Profile by tasting just a handful of wines. There are Fast Track Tastings for reds, whites and ross, as well as sparkling and fortified wines.

The Wine Ring app is now available for iOS devices on iTunes.
