Hundreds Gather for Annual SF Trans Day Remembrance Tribute
EDGE READ TIME: 2 MIN.
On Friday, November 20, at 6 p.m., join your community for the San Francisco LGBT Community Center for The 17th annual Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDoR).
Transgender Day of Remembrance is a genuine tribute to those who have lost their lives to anti-transgender hatred or prejudice. This day serves a purpose to raise awareness of the threat of abuse and violence faced by the transgender community, as well as their families and friends.
Despite recent community visibility, at least 25 transgender people have been murdered in the United States within the last year. This is almost double of what was reported last year. The level of violence targeting transgender people has become a national crisis, with more than twothirds of the violence impactingtransgender women of color.
The first TDoR was held in San Francisco in 1999 on a cold and rainy night. Since that evening, TDoR hasoccurredglobally on the 20th of November. TDoR also acts to bring visibility and momentum to a call to action to end the hatred and ignorance that the transgender community faces daily.
The continued violence towards transgender women of color and the increasing suicides by transgender/gender non-conforming youthdemonstrateshow far we still have to go to ensure that all members of the LGBT community have equal rights and safe communities.

The Transgender Day of Remembrance was founded in 1999 by Gwendolyn Ann Smith, a trans activist, to memorialize the murder of Rita Hester in Allston, Massachusetts. Today TDoR is observed in over 200 cities throughout more than 20 countries.
The San Francisco memorial event will feature speeches from community leaders, performances by trans artists, and a keynote by activist Janetta Johnson. The event will be followed by a reception and a balloon release to honor the lives taken from us.
The event is supported and sponsored by the SF LGBT Center, Transgender Law Center, Trans Employment Program (TEEI), Folsom Street Events, Trans: Thrive, Openhouse, andEl/LaParaTrans Latinas providing ASL &Spanish translation. Space is fully ADA accessible.
The Trans Day of Remembrance (TDoR) 2015 will be held from 6-8:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 20 at the San Francisco LGBT Community Center, 1800 Market St., San Francisco, CA 94102
