Coalition Launches From Vision to Reality: Together We Can End AIDS by 2020

EDGE READ TIME: 3 MIN.

On Tuesday, December 1 (World AIDS Day), the End AIDS NY 2020 Coalition, consisting of over 60 AIDS-service and community-based organizations, medical providers, and the NYC Council Speaker's Office, will host the second annual commemoration with a single message: "From Vision to Reality: Together We Can End AIDS by 2020."

The commemoration will take place at Harlem's World Famous Apollo Theater and provide an opportunity for the general public to hear updates about the work to reduce new HIV infections and end AIDS at epidemic levels in New York and how New Yorkers can help.

The commemoration will consist of three sections:

  • Embracing the Present -- featuring an American Indian dance performance and an update on Governor Andrew Cuomo's Ending the AIDS Epidemic Blueprint.

  • Tracing the Past -- featuring a memorial with the reading names of people who have died of AIDS-related complications and a musical performance by the NYC Gay Men's Chorus.

  • Facing the Future -- featuring speakers, both leadership and community members, on populations that are disproportionately affected by HIV and AIDS, such as young men of color who have sex with men, homeless/unstably housed, transgender women and men, injection drug users, cisgender women, and undocumented persons. This section will close with a voguing performance by LGBT youth of color.

The event will bring together community leaders, people living with HIV & AIDS, celebrities, NYC Gay Men's Chorus, Native American dancers, and elected and city officials including (as of 11/18): Senators Brad Hoylman and Gustavo Rivera, Assembly Member Richard Gottfried, Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, Council Members Corey Johnson and Stephen Levin, Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer and Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams.

By organizing the World AIDS Day commemoration uniting both the New York HIV/AIDS community and New York government, we send a powerful message to the rest of the country, that our state, from large metropolitan cities to rural communities upstate, has truly banded together to end the AIDS epidemic.

There is much work to be done over the course of the next five years to ensure that Governor Cuomo's Ending the Epidemic Blueprint is fully funded and implemented, and we have every confidence that we can accomplish this ambitious goal by working collaboratively.

Please RSVP before or on Monday, November 30, with one of the press contacts listed above. Photos and interviews are available at 10:30 a.m. at the step-and-repeat area. At 11 a.m., photos and filming can also take place while the speaking program is in progress.
