Mass. Medical Society Honors Harvey Makadon, MD., with LGBT Health Award

Harvey J. Makadon, M.D., Director of the National LGBT Health Education Center in Boston, has been honored by the Massachusetts Medical Society as the 2016 recipient of the Society's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Health Award, an honor recognizing an individual who has made outstanding contributions to LGBT health. He will receive the award at a medical society event November 3 at the Club Caf� in Boston.
In nominating him for the award, his colleagues noted that "few individuals have had more of an impact on LGBT health than Dr. Makadon, a visionary whose work has improved the lives of countless people."
Fellow physicians cited his leadership in producing the "Fenway Guide to LGBT Health," published by the American College of Physicians in 2008 and the first LGBT medical text used in medical schools across the country, as well as his creation of the National LGBT Health Education Center at the Fenway Institute in Boston, which he now directs.
Dr. Makadon is also director of the National Center for Innovation in HIV Care at Fenway Health. He is a member of the active staff of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and previously served as the Center's Vice President for Medical Affairs. He is also a Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, attaining the rank of full professor in 2008 after being first appointed to a teaching position in 1980.
A graduate of Cornell University with a B.A., Dr. Makadon earned his M.D. from Columbia University in 1977. He completed his internship and residencies in internal medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital from 1977-1980 and a Fellowship in internal medicine at Harvard Medical School.
In addition to his clinical and academic responsibilities, Dr. Makadon has held a variety of administrative posts at Beth Israel Deaconess and Harvard Medical School, as well as with regional, national, and international organizations. He has led and contributed to LGBT and AIDS-related programs and projects for such groups as The Boston Foundation, Brown University, Conference on Boston Teaching Hospitals, U.S. Public Health Service, National Commission on AIDS, American Medical Association, International AIDS Society, and Institute of Medicine. He has served six years as a member of the LBGT Committee of the Massachusetts Medical Society.
The Society's LGBT Award is the latest recognition accorded to Dr. Makadon. He was honored with the Harold Amos Faculty Diversity Award from Harvard Medical School in 2008, the Michael Type Leadership Award from Fenway Community Health Center in 2004, and the Award for Teaching Excellence from Harvard Medical School in 1990 and 1991. He resides in Chestnut Hill.
