Latino Theatre Projects Brings Diversity to Seattle Theatre Scene with 'Mariela in the Desert'
READ TIME: 2 MIN.
Beginning on Thursday, March 17, 2016, Latino Theatre Projects (LTP) will present "Mariela in the Desert."
"Mariela in the Desert" is a prize-winning play by celebrated Latina playwright Karen Zacarias. This story weaves a complex tale with a gripping mystery that reveals what happens to a family when one's creativity is shut away. This production will be the play's Washington State premiere. The play is produced in association with Theatre Off Jackson. The play reflects the growing interest in diversity in Seattle's theatre scene.
"Seattle has been struggling with the issues of diversity and equity in its theatre community," said Fernando Luna, director of the play. "The work of Latino Theatre Projects and other companies grounded in communities of color are essential for the community to reflect the amazing diversity among our artists and the richness of ethnic-based plays. Community support for such productions will make that diversity sustainable."
This production, directed by Fernando Luna, is designed to provide a rich Latino cultural experience. Mariela in the Desert is a story that portrays the lives of a noted Mexican artistic family during the rise of the artistic movement known as Mexican Expressionism. It connects in its atmosphere to relevant figures such as Orozco, Tina Modotti, Diego Rivera, and Frida Kahlo. Latino Theater Projects has a committed artistic vision of portraying positive role models that dignify and represent the high values of our community. We also believe in doing plays where women are empowered protagonist figures in the stories we are telling.
