Look at Your Period in a New Way With Lunette Menstrual Cup
Winnie McCroy READ TIME: 3 MIN.
If you're ready to look at your period -- and saving the environment -- in a whole new way, you may be ready to take a closer look at Lunette Menstrual Cups. The average woman uses 17,000 tampons or pads in her lifetime; the U.S. feminine protection market is a $3B annual industry. Maybe it's time to take yourself out of the equation.
Made of soft-grade silicon, Lunette is a healthy choice for your body, as it's hygienic against yeast, bacteria or odor. And unlike tampons, there's no worrying about potential toxins like chlorine bleach, phthalates, dioxin, BPA, BPS, or DEHP, or Toxic Shock Syndrome.
Although it takes a little bit of practice to get used to, the Lunette Menstrual Cup works in much the same way as a tampon. You just fold it up, and insert it into your vagina. It creates a leak-proof seal, holding the menstrual blood in its cup. When you're ready to remove it, just grab the tiny plastic tab and tug it out. Empty it into the toilet, clean it out via boiling water, alcohol or a disinfecting wipe, and reinsert. Unlike tampons, you only have to remove it once every 12 hours.
Using the Lunette is also an act of feminism! The company champions the one billion women who are on their period right now, encourages women to respect themselves and their body, and recommends you share experiences with other like-minded women.
"When you use a menstrual cup, you will be more in touch with your body," said the company. "There isn't any reason why you should try to hide your periods. With a Lunette cup, you can learn to track your periods and the consistency of the blood, and you will learn that your body can do this amazing thing that doesn't need to be faded away."
After using the Lunette for several months, this writer can testify that it will seriously put you in touch with something you may not have wanted to... touch. If you're squeamish about your body and the large quantities of blood that comes out of it, this may not be the ideal product for you. But if you're up for the challenge, the Lunette may truly revolutionize your concept of periods.
Lunette will also liberate you from uncomfortable, bulky pads and tampons, and the high cost that goes with them. It is small and discreetly travels with you, so you never 'run out.' And it's easy on the environment, too, as it has no plastic applicators, wrappers or bio-waste, and comes in a recycled box, complete with a reusable satin storage bag.
Like tampons, Lunette is safe to wear during sports (horseback riding!), swimming, even sleeping in the nude. Makers even tout that it's so discreet, you can wear it during oral sex, and your partner won't notice a thing. We can't testify to that, however.
Lunette has received approval from international government health agencies including the FDA in the US, and the TGA in Australia. In Finland, from which it hails, it's the recipient of the prestigious Key Flag Emblem, which certifies only the highest quality product.
One Lunette cup will last for years, for about $40. They're available in Model 1, of a softer silicon with a smaller cup, and Model 2, of firmer silicone an a larger cut and stem, to hold up to 30 ml. Go online for a detailed sizing guide, which takes into account virgins, teens, mothers, sportswomen and those with a sensitive bladder. And start enjoying the freedom of Lunette!
