OkCupid Introduces New Badge For Planned Parenthood Supporters

READ TIME: 2 MIN.

Planned Parenthood Federation of America announced a new partnership with OkCupid today to introduce a Planned Parenthood badge on the app that enables people to find -- and connect with -- other members who support the organization and access to reproductive health and rights.

The in-app badge rolls out today, kicking off a week-long promotion of sexual health information and tips via OkCupid's and Planned Parenthood's social media channels.

The new badge will read "#IStandWithPP" and will be prominently displayed on the profile of every OkCupid member who has publicly responded "no" to the question, "Should the government defund Planned Parenthood?" Over 80 percent of OkCupid members support Planned Parenthood, including 90 percent of millennial women. The app will promote daters with the badge to others who also have it so they can connect to what's important to them.

"Knowing that your prospective date supports equal rights, access to reproductive health care, and the best evidence-based sex education is undeniably sexy, and OkCupid's new Planned Parenthood badge will let users see that immediately," said Dawn Laguens, executive vice president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America. "At Planned Parenthood, we are continually looking for innovative approaches to get people the information and care they need to lead healthy lives and achieve their goals -- whether that's on their phones or in a health center."

As part of our commitment to providing accurate sexual and reproductive health information to as many people as possible, no matter where they are, Planned Parenthood collaborated with the dating website and app to build support for Planned Parenthood's fight for reproductive rights into its high-tech algorithms used to connect people based on their shared beliefs and interests. The new #IStandWithPP badge will allow those who want to publicly show their support for Planned Parenthood to do so.

"OkCupid's partnership with Planned Parenthood is really exciting because it enables us to help people connect on the issues that matter to them. In this current climate, this matters more than ever when it comes to finding 'your person,'" said Melissa Hobley, CMO, OkCupid. "We know that Planned Parenthood is driving conversations, support, and education that millions care about. When we looked at the data, we saw that our community on OkCupid was talking about Planned Parenthood... so we decided to make it easy to find the folks who cared about the same thing."

This partnership comes as part of a sustained effort of support by major brands that stand with Planned Parenthood and support access to sexual and reproductive health care. This effort has recently included partnerships with the Seattle Storm WNBA team, Warner Bros, Tumblr, and the Council of Fashion Designers of America.

This year has seen some of the most intense political fights to protect Planned Parenthood and access to reproductive health and rights in a generation, including the effort to defeat the defunding of Planned Parenthood and the repeal of the Affordable Care Act in the U.S. House and Senate.
