Forget Your Pills? Popit Sends Reminders to Your Phone
READ TIME: 2 MIN.
Popit, a Finnish startup focusing on medical technology solutions, has kicked off a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo for a revolutionary solution to track pills that come in blister packs. The solution will be initially available for the over 100 million birth control pill users in the world, and will later expand to cover many other daily medications.
Popit's adherence improving solution comprises a small, easy-to-use device called Popit Sense and an elegant app. Popit Sense, with sleek Nordic design, comes in eight stylish colors: Black, White, Pink, Lemon, Ice Blue, Blue, Marrs Green and Violet.
Popit Sense attaches onto a regular pill sheet like a clip-on. Once attached, it automatically detects with patented technology when a pill has been extracted. This information is sent via Bluetooth to the app, which supports treatment by tracking medication effectiveness, remaining pills, and medication usage patterns. It also reminds the user or a loved one if a pill has been forgotten.
Popit calls this the Internet of Pills because unique technology is making the pill sheet connected and enabling new possibilities in healthcare.
Popit Sense will retail for $79, but on Indiegogo the pre-order prices will start from $29 (incl. shipping in US & CA). The smartphone application will be free.
Teemu Piirainen, Popit's CEO: "Starting the campaign on Indiegogo is a significant milestone for us. We've gotten overwhelmingly positive feedback, and we already have thousands of people all over the world signed up for the launch.
Originally Popit Sense was developed for use in a clinical setting, but it can be especially beneficial for users of daily medication, like oral contraceptives. For example, surprisingly many birth control pill users do not acknowledge the 9% risk of unintended pregnancy that comes with typical use, meaning occasional forgetfulness. We can help in becoming more consistent," Piirainen continues.
In the future the solution will work with other medications as well. Support for the additional medication groups will start rolling out in 2018. The same hardware will work and new medications will be enabled through app upgrades.
Popit is a pioneer in improving patient adherence through smart consumer devices. The Company is dedicated to improving adherence by digitizing medicine, a major opportunity that offers benefits for pharmaceutical companies and consumers alike. Popit raised 1.2M/$1.4M seed financing in Aug 2017.
First targeting birth control pills, the Company will expand support to other major medication groups like anti-depression, hypertension, cholesterol, type 2 diabetes and thyroid medications, which combined have an addressable market of well over 1.5 billion users. Approximately 50% of these patients are not taking medications as prescribed.
