Eddie Redmayne Condemns Online 'Vitriol' Directed at J.K. Rowling

Eddie Redmayne has spoken out against the online "vitriol" directed at J.K. Rowling, IndieWire reports.

After a series of transphobic tweets last year and back in June, Rowling faced mounting backlash that only appears to have worsened with the release of her latest book, "Troubled Blood," under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith. In an interview with The Daily Mail, Redmayne explains that even if he disagreed with Rowling's anti-trans comments, he finds the "vitriol" directed at the author on social media equally as "disgusting" as the insults and trolling directed at trans people.

In June, Redmayne issued a statement in support of the trans community:

"Respect for transgender people remains a cultural imperative, and over the years I have been trying to constantly educate myself. This is an ongoing process.

"As someone who has worked with both J.K. Rowling and members of the trans community, I wanted to make it absolutely clear where I stand. I disagree with Jo's comments. Trans women are women, trans men are men and non-binary identities are valid. I would never want to speak on behalf of the community but I do know that my dear transgender friends and colleagues are tired of this constant questioning of their identities, which all too often results in violence and abuse. They simply want to live their lives peacefully, and it's time to let them do so."

Filming for the third installment of Rowling's "Fantastic Beasts" series, which stars Redmayne, has resumed. No release date has been mentioned.
